Music Reviews

Tue Nov 3, 2009, 7:01 AM
No not here. At least not yet. I'm thinking of going into reviews. Not necessarily of video games though. I mean, everyone does that already. Some do it great, some do it not-so-much. I could go into film reviews, but the Critic kind of beat me to the punch a couple years back anyway. So I thought maybe I'd take up music reviewing. Mostly along the lines of rock music, albums, singles, music rhythm games, etc.

Van Halen

Another non-art related journal. Sue me.

I've explored a couple of different forums to see that a number of folks have shot down Guitar Hero: Van Halen pretty early on just before the game's release. Which is disappointing. The game is actually really enjoyable. Granted some of the charts are odd and yeah, they cut out ten seconds of Painkiller (big friggin' whoop) but it's still pretty fun.

However, the game is not without its flaws. No behind-the-scenes stuff, no colorful animated intro and no songs from the Hager era, which will probably tick off long time fans. Thankfully we still have "Rock Facts" for every song in the game.

It would be easy to blame Activision for why this game doesn't stand out as much. And you'd be dead on for thinking so. Acitivision apparently moved the game back to give Guitar Hero 5 better leeway against Beatles: Rock Band. And no surprise either. I'm one of the lucky souls who got the game for free, so I cannot complain about this package in any sort of harsh light.

Though I hope next time Activision doesn't get a developer famous for making lousy music games to chart the next Guitar Hero spin-off game. Seriously, Underground? Hopefully they'll get Beenox next time.

As for you good folks, it's probably wise to wait until the laughable $60 price tag goes down. The game, as much as I hate to admit it, is not worth that much money. If you're not getting it free with GH5, then stay away from it for a few months and wait for the price to drop. It's great to own and play (especially if you're a Van Halen fan) but it just isn't worth the cost, by any means.

There always seems to be more work and less time for stuff like this. Also my YouTube account was closed for me by what I'm assuming was a hacker. I'm not particularly upset. I haven't had much time for the account anyway. Same as dA for that matter. Hell, I haven't drawn or even rendered anything for some time for that matter. Sucks too. Pretty much wasting my subscription, though I didn't even pay for it, so I guess it doesn't matter.
